What the Green Dot Symbol Really Means and How It Is Used

The green dot symbol on product packaging has a very specific meaning, but it’s not what you think.
When I see the green dot symbol on product packaging, I usually assume that it means the product is recyclable. But in fact, the green dot doesn’t mean anything about the product or its materials—it simply means that the company joined the Green Dot Scheme. The green dot mark is a symbol of financial contribution to a recycling system, not a statement about the product itself.
This is probably why there are so many consumers confused by the green dot. Does it mean that the packaging belongs in the recycling bin? Or does it mean that the product was made from recycled materials?
The green dot symbol on product packaging has been around for 30 years, yet very few people know what it actually signifies. That’s why the Oslo-based studio Goods decided to rebrand it. Invited by Two Degrees Creative and The-Brand Identity, the studio set out to reimagine the Green Dot logo so that it would no longer be associated with ambiguity.
Rather than being a static symbol of financial contribution, the new green dot is a mark of quality. The new identity tells the complete story in an easy-to-digest way, making it clear that the green dot indicates both recyclability and the proportion of packaging that is made from previously recycled materials.
Digital Use and Standardized Graphic Form
The green dot symbol functions in digital UI contexts as a status and presence indicator. Green dot icons can be found in PNG and icon formats, and are commonly used in UI, dashboards, and notifications. However, organizations may develop a toxic relationship with green dot presence indicators—when green dots don’t appear frequently enough or long enough, users get anxious or confused.
The standardized graphic form of the green dot symbol has also been documented. An SVG version of the symbol was created on 13 September 2009, and sourced from Openclipart. The symbol was authored by Siddharth Patil.
